First Time Sign On

Use the keyboard or Graffiti® writing area to enter or edit text and/or numbers.

From the Applications screen of your handheld, tap to display the AIM Sign On screen, which will look similar to the one pictured below:

Signal strength indicator: Reflects both the transmit and receive signals. The greater the number of bars (zero bars = no coverage, five bars = excellent coverage), the better it can communicate on the wireless network.
  • If your radio is off, the signal strength indicator displays Off, and you cannot send or receive instant messages. However, if you are still signed on to AIM, your screen name still displays in your friends' online buddy list groups. To send and receive instant messages (if you are in coverage), turn the radio back on or sign off AIM so you will not appear online to others.
  • If you are out of coverage, the signal strength indicator displays no bars, and you cannot send or receive instant messages. However, if you are still signed on to AIM, your screen name still displays in your friends' online buddy list groups. If you are out of coverage, still signed on to AIM and someone tries to send you a message, the AIM service will attempt to send you the message. However, if the AIM service cannot successfully deliver the message (i.e., you remain out of coverage indefinitely) you will be signed off and will no longer appear online.

  2. If you are a New User, tap to display and select New User, then refer to the New User section above.

Troubleshooting

Following is a list of messages you might receive on your handheld, the probable cause of the message and what you can do to resolve it:

AIM Connection

Message
Probable Cause
Suggested Resolution
Unexpected error in AIM services. The wireless network may be congested so you cannot send or receive instant messages. However, because you are still signed on to AIM, your screen name still displays in your friends' online buddy list groups. To prevent confusion to users, the AIM service signed you off so that you will no longer appear online. Sign on again.
Your session was abnormally disconnected.
You have been signed off because the connection was lost. You were out of coverage for too long of a period.
Your account could not be signed onto the server. Your sign on information did not reach the AIM server possibly due to low/no coverage. Try again later when coverage is better.

AIM Conversations

Message
Probable Cause
Suggested Resolution
Cannot accept your message. Please try again later. You can have 20 open IM conversations at one time. This message displays when receiving a new message that attempts to start the 21st IM conversation. End one or more old or unused IM conversations.

Storage/Memory

Message
Probable Cause
Suggested Resolution
Could not open the buddy database. Possible low memory issue or corruption occurred. Check the device to see if memory problems are occurring elsewhere. Then try to delete other applications or reset the device. If that does not work, try reinstalling AIM.
Could not open IM conversation database.
Could not create conversation database.
Could not open the synchronization database.
